JUNE 2008
Club Meetings
Club member, Richard Bicheno, demonstrated the making of a novelty frying
pan at our
February meeting. The 'Hands On' evening for March was
cancelled in order that Bill
Care could bring forward his scheduled October demonstration. Bill
demonstrated the
making of a natural edge goblet and a natural edge square edge bowl. Tony
Walton was
invited to our April meeting to demonstrate the making of a vase with
a pierced butterfly
motif and a box with a screwed lid. Our Chairman, Derek Manwaring was due to
demonstrate at the May meeting, but due to the Club's commitment to
have a display at
'Living Arts' at Hatfield House and Derek's committed presence on that day,
Denis
Fisher kindly stepped in and demonstrated the use of 'oyster' inserts in the
rims of
bowls.
June 'Hands on' Meeting
Primarily for the benefit of our less experienced members, the meeting
will be a 'hands
on' and clinic night. Experienced members will be on hand to give their
advice, and
personal approach, on all aspects of our craft, from chucking methods, tool
techniques,
sanding and finishing to tool sharpening.
'Hands On' nights are intended to be less formal and more relaxed, giving
members a
chance to interact with the night's activities and to engage more freely in
related
conversation. Therefore, the greater the input from members the more
successful the
evening will be. If you are having problems with the grinding of any
particular tool then
bring it along and have it ground into a working state
'Living Arts' Hatfield House
Thameside were invited to provide a display and demonstrate the craft/art
of woodturning
at the 'Living Arts' show held in the grounds of Hatfield House over the
period 7th – 11th
May. Unfortunately these dates coincided with our May club meeting and our
spring
seminar but due to the support of club members Brian Pitcher, Dennis
Smith, Arthur
Tewkesbury, Peter Root, Colin and Annete Firth, Len Roberts and Ivy Jeacock
willing to steward the event and Derek Manwaring and Chris Wedlake
demonstrating
on the Thursday and Saturday, Peter Jackson and Wally Hammond
demonstrating on
the Friday, Dennis and Debbie Knott and Bob Jeacock on the Sunday,
the show and
club events all were a success.
Spring Seminar 2008
Tony Witham was invited to demonstrate t our Spring Seminar on Saturday
10th May.
Tony made a natural edge bowl in lilac and a hollow form in walnut with an
African
Blackwood insert and a small 'Bowler hat' box in walnut. Members enjoyed an informative and interesting demonstration
and the
buffet lunch, with a slide show of members work.
Projects for 2008
The first project for the March meeting was 'Turn a Toy'. A
variety of items were
submitted, Traction engines, Skittles, Helicopter, Executive toy, a Rocket
and a selection
of bowls. The second project for the May meeting was 'A Pair'. This
produced a variety
of items, including boxes and goblets. All the items were assessed and
marked by a
committee member and club member.
The next project for the July meeting is to turn Honey Dippers and
Garden Dibbers. Use
your imagination and produce something different
Wood Recognition
It is intended to have a wood recognition session later on in the year.
Members are
invited to turn an egg and cup, in different wood species. Members are
requested to turn
as many as they wish, not marking the type of wood, but still sign your
work. There is
plenty of scope to use your imagination for the proportions of the egg and
cup.
Members have submitted a few examples but a lot more are required.
Annual Club Competition 2008
The above projects do not take the place of the club's annual competition
to be judged at
the December meeting. However, this year there will be three categories,
Novice,
Intermediate, and Advanced.

special for the
occasion. Your items should be delivered by the 10th July meeting.
