Shaun Clifford
Club Night 9th October 2025
Shaun showed us how to turn a winged bowl from a oblong ‘green’ log. He set the log onto a screw chuck on the eventual topside of the bowl so he could create a tenon on the bottom of the bowl for reversing. As this was an oblong, this meant that at each end the cut was partially in air so it is important to have enough speed so that it appears to be round but ‘ghosted’. By this we mean that you can see through the piece but still see the outline to cut. All cuts must be presented to the wood carefully to avoid nasty catches. If you look at the following images you will see the ‘ghosting on the outer sections whereas the bowl in the centre is a solid view as it is the width of the wood. After reversing Shaun cut the inside of the bowl. One of the biggest challenges is how to remove the tenon as holding with a deep profile needs some thought.
